THE BASIC WORKING PRINCIPLE

1. Your water softener has 3 main parts, a valve head, resin vessel and brine
cabinet.

2. The valve head diverts water through a cylinder called the resin vessel.

3. As the water passes through the resin contained in the vessel, hardness (calcium)
is trapped.

4. The water emerging from the resin vessel is then termed as "soft water "
(less than 60 ppm).

5. After a period of use, the resin becomes saturated with unwanted hardness salts.

6. When this happens, brine from the brine cabinet is used to automatically wash,
rinse, and flush unwanted hardness salts out to drain.

7. This cleansing or regeneration process substitutes sodium (salt) for the hardness
(calcium) in the water.

8. The brine cabinet needs to be periodically topped up with salt.

9. The amount of salt used is dependent on water usage.

An approximate guideline to salt usage in the domestic household would be 0.5 kg to 2.0 kg per day dependent on which make and model of water softener you have installed.

The Average Cost of Running A Calmag Water Softener Is Approximately £0.16 Per Day
