Balanced or unbalanced supply refers to the water pressure and may be better understood as equal or unequal. Balanced or equal pressures are generally taken from a common source, both from dedicated gravity fed storage tanks or both from mains pipe supply. The equal and opposite forces of hot cold water provides for a steady ambient mix with neither hot nor cold overriding the other if there is a draw off of the cold supply to a WC, washing machine, tap or other outlet. Where fittings are connected to separate sources commonly mains fed cold and tank fed hot this provides unbalanced supplies of unequal pressure. When there is a draw off to another source on the cold supply the pressure drops and any ambient mixed temperature is disrupted when the hot water temporarily becomes the dominant feed of the mixture increasing the temperature. When the greater cold pressure is restored it then dominates the mix significantly reducing the temperature and the mix has to be reconfigured manually. If the cold pressure is significantly different then it is possible for the cold to cross migrate into the hot supply right back to the source. The reverse is true for hot to infiltrate the cold supply and hot stored water is regarded as "contaminated" and it is undesirable for this to enter the mains supply. It is therefore a general requirement to fit single check valves or some other no less effective backflow prevention device fitted immediately upstream of both hot and cold water inlets. A pressure reducing valve fitted to cold mains can be used to reasonably balance supplies with storage fed hot. we try to show the complete range of ideal-Standard and Armitage-shanks taps if we did miss any then please email or phone us for a quote
